Agility is exploring wheeled robots alongside Digit
Jonathan Hurst said wheels could reach more sites sooner, while legs keep getting safer. There is no product, name, or date yet.
Agility Robotics is looking at wheeled machines as well as the Digit humanoid, chief robot officer Jonathan Hurst told The Robot Report. A wheeled rendering showed up in the company’s Digit 5 launch video. Hurst said it was an early look, not a launch.
“We’re exploring a range of robot designs and form factors, including wheels, to address different operating environments and customer needs,” he wrote. He said legged robots should cover more jobs as they get safer and more reliable, and that other forms could get robots into more places sooner. Asked whether a wheeled Digit or a new one-armed mobile robot was the idea, he said it was too early to say.
Digit 5 itself stays a biped. Agility has said the new legs, battery, and safety changes came from Digit 4 work at sites including Amazon, GXO, Schaeffler, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada. Early access for Digit 5 is planned for the first half of 2027.
