Anthropic calls Claude Duet early, and says so out loud

In its preview pitch, reported by CNBC, Anthropic set Duet against Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s Dots while warning it may misread a thread or misjudge what is urgent.

Launch announcements are rarely modest. Anthropic’s pitch for Claude Duet came with an unusual dose of caution. Announcing the research preview on October 21, CNBC reports, Anthropic positioned Duet as a rival to Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s Dots, aimed at small businesses and professionals, and then spent part of its message explaining what Duet might get wrong.

The pitch

Duet can send daily briefs, watch connected apps, and handle jobs such as building dashboards, scheduling meetings and creating financial forecasts. Anthropic describes it as an agent that comes to you with what needs attention, keeps working when you step away, and checks with you before it acts on your behalf.

That last part is the core of Duet’s design. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows the action and waits for approval, as we explained in the Duet launch.

The warning

According to CNBC, Anthropic says Duet is still in an early phase and “might misread a thread or miscalibrate what’s urgent.” It also says personal errands like booking tickets are “not quite as strong.” TechCrunch heard the same message, which we cover in Duet is built for work.

For a background agent, misjudging urgency is not a small flaw. The whole promise is that the agent decides what deserves your attention. If it flags the wrong things, it becomes one more inbox to manage. Anthropic naming that risk up front sets expectations for preview users.

Three rivals, three strategies

The comparison to Muse and Dots is useful because the three take different paths. Meta’s Muse is free for most people and leans on shopping, with more than 10 million people setting it up in about six weeks. OpenAI’s Dots are a premium feature on ChatGPT Pro from $100 a month, with a broad set of abilities and more than 4,000 connected apps, as we covered at the Dots launch. Duet is aimed at work and is headed to Anthropic’s $20 Pro plan at general availability.

Hands-on testing so far suggests caution is warranted across the board. Axios found both Dots and Muse strong on research and weak at the checkout.

How to get in

A waitlist opened the same day for US Pro and Max subscribers, with access through a standalone app or claude.ai. There is no date yet for general availability.

Our take

Anthropic’s frankness is smart positioning. Agents that act on your behalf will make mistakes, and a company that admits it from the start earns some room to improve. Preview users should take Anthropic at its word: start with briefs and drafts, check what Duet flags, and widen its job as it proves reliable. More in Bot HQ.
