OpenAI launches Dots, always-on agents in ChatGPT

Announced at DevDay on September 29, Dots run on GPT‑6 Astra with their own cloud computer and are rolling out to ChatGPT Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise.

OpenAI introduced Dots at its DevDay event on September 29, describing them as “remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle everything.” Each Dot is powered by GPT‑6 Astra, has its own cloud computer and browser, and can connect to more than 4,000 apps through OpenAI’s plugins.

People reach their Dot in ChatGPT on desktop, web and mobile, by message or voice call, and in Slack and Teams, with texting coming soon. OpenAI says a Dot learns preferences from feedback and does read-only “proactive research” in connected apps when you are not working with it. Built-in rules decide when it acts on its own and when it asks; Custom Rules can allow, require approval for, or block specific actions, and tasks such as changing a password always stay with the user.

Dots are rolling out now to ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, and Enterprise workspaces can turn on a beta. The first Dot is included in those plans, and conversations with it do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits. You start with one Dot; OpenAI says more will come later, along with a preview of “specialist” Dots for companies and an integration with Microsoft Agent 365.

The Verge and WIRED both framed the launch as OpenAI’s answer to Meta’s Muse, which launched on September 8.
