Who can get an OpenAI Dot, and how to set one up
Dots need ChatGPT Pro or Business Premium, are not offered to Pro users in Europe or the UK yet, and have to be created on a computer.
Two weeks after launch, OpenAI’s Dots are still a paid feature with a staggered rollout, Engadget reports. Consumers need a ChatGPT Pro plan, which starts at $100 a month with $200 and $500 tiers. Business Premium customers get Dots wherever ChatGPT is offered, and Enterprise, Healthcare and Education workspaces can use them once an admin turns them on. Free, Go and Plus accounts are not included, and OpenAI has not said if they will be.
Pro subscribers in the European Union, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and the UK are left out at launch. Even eligible accounts may wait several days before the option appears.
Setup happens in the ChatGPT desktop app or a desktop browser, not on a phone. You name your Dot and pick its look, and then you can talk to it from the mobile app. Apps are connected from the Dot’s profile under Customize, then Plugins.
Your first Dot comes with the plan, and OpenAI says extra Dots and more capacity per Dot will be sold later, without prices yet. Chatting with a Dot is free, and so will texting it once that arrives, but work it does through Codex or ChatGPT Work counts against your monthly limits after a first month of extended allowances.
