System Safety Engineer

Job description

Overland AI is hiring a Systems Safety Engineer to join our growing safety team within Systems, Safety, and Test Engineering (SST). You will own system safety for our autonomous ground vehicles across the full lifecycle, from concept and requirements through integration, test, and field operations. You'll work closely with the engineers building the system while keeping an independent view of risk. Your work produces the hazard analyses, safety requirements, and verification evidence behind our MIL-STD-882E safety programs, ATEC safety releases, and customer certifications, across multiple programs running in parallel.

Job responsibilities

  • Perform hazard analyses (PHA, FHA, SHA, SSHA, O&SHA, FMEA, FTA) per MIL-STD-882E, scaled to system maturity.
  • Analyze autonomy and software-controlled behaviors, making sure software safety controls are captured, traced, and verified.
  • Define safety requirements and flow them into system and subsystem requirements.
  • Partner with internal teams to drive safety features to implementation.
  • Maintain hazard tracking and the system safety case, with traceability from hazard to mitigation to verification evidence.
  • Partner with test teams on safety test objectives and acceptance criteria, and take part in lab, vehicle, and field testing.
  • Evaluate verification evidence and support readiness reviews, safety releases, and risk acceptance decisions.
  • Prepare safety documentation for ATEC, government, and commercial reviewers, and communicate risk clearly to leadership and external stakeholders.

Job requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Hands-on system safety engineering experience on complex systems (autonomy, robotics, vehicles, aerospace, defense, or similar).
  • Working knowledge of MIL-STD-882E or related standards such as JSSSEH, UL 4600, ISO 26262, and ISO 21448.
  • Experience producing safety artifacts for external review (e.g., Safety Assessment Reports).
  • Sound, independent engineering judgment on risk.
  • Comfort in a fast-moving environment with real hardware and field testing.
  • Experience supporting ATEC or other DoD test and certification authorities.
  • Experience with autonomous vehicles, ADAS, or semi-autonomous systems.
